Job offer comparison calculator

Base salary is the headline, not the whole package. A lower salary with a strong retirement match and guaranteed bonus can beat a higher one without. Enter both offers on total compensation.

Use a realistic average, not the best possible year.
The amount the employer actually contributes, not the percentage offered.
Health contributions, car allowance, stock, relocation. Estimate honestly.

How this is calculated

Each offer is totalled as base salary + annual bonus + employer retirement contribution + the value of anything else you can reasonably price.

The calculator then reports which offer pays more in total and by how much, including the difference as a percentage of the smaller offer.

Only include things you are confident about. A speculative bonus that may not pay should be discounted or excluded, or you will be comparing a promise against a certainty.

Worked example: Offer A: $100,000 + $5,000 bonus + $4,000 match = $109,000. Offer B: $105,000 + $10,000 + $3,000 = $118,000. Offer B is higher by $9,000, which is 8.3% of Offer A.

Common questions

Should I include a bonus that is not guaranteed?

Be cautious. A discretionary bonus is not the same as salary. If it has historically paid at 60% of target, value it at 60% rather than at target.

How do I price health insurance?

Estimate your own annual cost under each plan — premiums plus expected out-of-pocket — and enter the difference as other value. If both are similar, leave it out; it cancels.

Does it account for cost of living differences?

No. If the two jobs are in different cities, the totals are not directly comparable. Adjust the figures yourself first, or treat the difference as a starting point only.

What this does not do: This compares the compensation you enter and nothing else. It does not evaluate career progression, job security, working hours, commute, culture, or cost of living, and total pay is rarely the only thing that should decide a job choice.
